Stressing Less: Supporting Your Self & Your Body During Tough Times
During times of stress it's important to be attuned to our body's biological needs to stay resilient and come out on the other side of the storm in good health.
Stress can have profoundly damaging effects on the body such as driving up inflammation, diminishing the body's ability to fully rejuvenate, lowering the immune system and even elevating cancer risks. That's why during times when the pressure is on, self-care is more important than ever.
If our diet and lifestyle isn't aligned with lowering stress levels, we can start to walk on precarious grounds. One of the easiest and more guaranteed ways to support yourself is to be aware about the effects of diet on the body.
During stress, our body needs extra nutrients to support itself and help itself repair which is why I often recommend getting superfoods, supplements and extra antioxidants in to the diet to my clients.
A few of my personal favourites include:
- Turmeric Curcumin - supplement it, enjoy a golden latte or add when cooking
- A good 'Wild Vitamin C' supplement (such as Camu Camu or Kakadu Plum)
- Wild or mercury-tested Omega 3 fish oil
- Vitamin B12: apparently we all need to supplement this!
- A high quality Matcha powder: the theanine balances out the effect of caffeine to give you calm, focused energy so 10 points if you replace your daily coffee with a matcha drink
- Magnesium - get it in a spray for your body or bath salts
- Any light exercise you can manage
- Get in to nature as much as possible!
Self-Sabotage During Stressful Times - Using RTT
Whilst all this advice is practical and probably not completely mind-blowing for you to hear, there is one aspect that is often overlooked. Have you ever noticed how in times of intense stress all your good habits and practices just go out the window? Right when you need to be practicing them more than ever.
For clients presenting to me with stress issues, elevated cortisol or adrenal related problems, insomnia and sleep problems, one of my key focuses during hypnosis is to create behavioural switches in the mind that are geared towards installing positive and resilient self-care behaviours during adverse times.
I strongly believe that having the awareness surrounding the importance of self-care, as well as the behaviour that aligns to put self-care in to practice, is an absolutely fundamental tool in our fast-paced lives.
